5 Ways to Easily Find a New Church After Moving

Moving to a city can be just as much scary as exciting.

You feel alienated if there’s no family or friends within a few hundred miles. Not to mention all the challenges you’ll face.

Like finding a suitable home, transportation, schooling options, language barriers, just to name a few.

But if you believe in Jesus then, finding a community of fellow believers where you feel welcome and at home can prove to be a difficult task depending on where you are in the world.

But it doesn’t have to be a burden, and I’ll share some ways our family has coped with moving so frequently and still finding ways to feed our faith.

For some reason, everyone treats churches like a buffet (I’m not judging. Totally understand. It’s just a strange phenomenon I’m sorta trying to wrap my head around).

We go and pick at what we like and don’t. And if it doesn’t suit us, we keep searching until we find another and another. I guess I wish it were easier.

Nevertheless, here are some tips in finding your new home:

5 Ways to Easily Find a New Church After Moving 2

    Look Up the Sermons Online

Many churches offer their sermons broadcasted online. This gives you a chance to watch the pastor and any speakers and get a feel for the church without having to waste physical time and energy in going week after week.

    Read Through Their Website

Almost every church will have a website where you can reference their doctrines and beliefs. They’ll also be list activities that the church provides & any ministries that they are apart of. You’ll also most likely get a chance to see photos of the actual church building.

Now, these strategies may not actually apply to all churches. I’ve found several cities within Europe where there was no website to reference… in which you’ll need to use social media to find the church and find out more about it.

    Get Recommendations

This one is a simple as it sounds. Ask around. This is simple enough if you’re relocating for work or with family or friends. However, is you’re moving alone or with your immediate family with no resources in the new city then, you will literally have to step out of your comfort zone and ask around ask people you meet in the market, people you see in the street and store. Don’t shy away from making conversation. Children are great ice breakers, and this may be easier if you do have small children that you’re able to take to park to school or then you can meet other families.

    Seek Out Directories

Remember those big yellow information books that are always placed in front of your building or home on your local community? Well, now we finally have a use for them besides laying them down as a table stand or paperweight! Go ahead and look up your local churches.(I’ve found them in every country & city so far)

Now say you’re in a new town or city you’re not familiar with almost every city has an online directory that you can find. Try typing the name of the city+state+province+country and directory into the search engine of your choice.

If this feels you do the same as above, take this information into social media. So for example, if you wanted to look on Instagram, you will open up the Instagram app and type in the name of the city you’re in and church and see what search results pop up.

Rinse and repeat for Facebook Twitter Pinterest and any other social platform you can think of.

    Take Advantage of Sundays (&weekdays)

If all else fails, you can just do it the good ol’ fashion way and go to church on Sunday. You could simply walk around and just be a true tourist in the city that you’re moving into until you walk around and find a church.

To make the most of your Sundays, you could see if churches have different service times and plan your day around attending the different churches at different hours of the day on Sunday.

Many churches also have midweek services that you can attend and take advantage of those if Sundays aren’t a good time.

If you go to church-how, do you find your new “home”?

    Travel Medicine Cabinet Essentials

A super short list of everything you need and none of what you don’t

If you’re traveling out the country, I suggest always having your own ‘medical kit’ for those unexpected [or expected] moments… This is what I personally travel with and find extremely essential for us.

    • A travel antibiotic kit or GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract, a natural alternative)

Whenever you intend on traveling, it’s wise to let your doctor know. Depending on where you are headed- they may recommend certain immunizations, vaccinations or antibiotic kits. Think: malaria, for example. You definitely want to be prepared.

    • Probiotics & Vitamins

Ideally, you should be taking probiotics every day. But, if you aren’t already, then hear me now…go RUN to the store and buy some! (okay sorry for shouting) Seriously though, your gut is pretty much your second brain. Treat it like one. With tender love and care. Ditto for vitamins. I would start a regime asap, at least 2-4 weeks in advance of intended travels. Obviously, speak this over with your practitioner first.

    • Essential Oils [if you use them…for stomach/body aches, tiredness, jetlag etc]

If you’re into essential oils, there are a bunch that’ll make travel illnesses go away more smoothly. (For example, peppermint for stomach aches or body aches, rosemary for concentration/alertness/focus, lavender for stress and the list goes on and on).

    • Prescription Medication [If there is something you take daily]
    • Extra supply of everything [as possible]

If there are some things that you normally take or need on a DAILY basis, then go ahead and try really hard to have at least an extra 2 day supply of these things. (In case of a lost luggage etc) Things like prescription medication, contact lenses etc.

    • Some sort of electrolyte sachet [or electrolyte drink in cases of dehydration]

Because you can never go through security with liquids (with the exception of baby formula/water/juice for baby) and no one wants to pack heavy liquids in their luggage, this is the next best option. And you’ll be grateful you have something like this whenever you or your family members become dehydrated for whatever reason.

    • Bacterial ointment [for cuts/abrasions/small infection]
    • Bandages
    • Gauze
    • Alcohol pads/disinfectant hand wipes/sanitizer

The Dirty Secrets Your Hotel Won’t Tell You

What Hotels Won't Tell You 7

So you’ve arrived at your destination, BUT, your apartment isn’t ready…Sweet mama, DO NOT fear! You can make this work. Ask me how I know…go on…

You see, I’ve had the luxury and unique struggle of having to live out of several different hotels for weeks at a time….ranging from one week to 5 months at a time. With the family! In not so ‘busy’ cities. In other words, I spent A LOT of time INSIDE the hotels watching every person’s role and daily routines…So yes, trust me when I say, I understand what you’re going through and when I tell you- YOU CAN & WILL get through this!

What Hotels Won't Tell You 8

Because I am a recovering clean-freak, its only fitting I begin with all the deets I’ve learned about hotel cleanliness…

So here are The not so glorious sides of hotels….

    (What hotels won’t tell you)

    Here it is:

    Cups:

If you’ve ever stayed in a hotel, you know very well, that most, if not all will be supplied with a coffee maker and cups and mugs of some sort. (Props to the paper cup hotels!) What you may not be aware of, however, is – how these items are cleaned. ALERT: They aren’t! Well, sort of. These items never leave the room and are almost always ‘washed’ right in the bathroom sink! With plain ol’ water and a towel. Just fantastic.[insert sarcasm]

What Hotels Won't Tell You 9

    Phones:

Walk into a hotel room and 9/10 it WILL be clean. However, this does not mean that everything is not sanitized or cleaned correctly. Note- the phone and tv remote…two of the most touched items in a room by customers but never cleaned. Just think about that for a moment.

What Hotels Won't Tell You 10

    Water:

This may or may not be an obvious one, but the water in the room really should NOT be consumed. It typically is not deemed as ‘safe’ drinking water.

What Hotels Won't Tell You 11

    Carpet:

Another funny one here, if you have children, the rug is rarely cleaned correctly. Do NOT eat anything that falls on the carpet LOL no matter how clean it looks.

What Hotels Won't Tell You 12

    Menu options:

If you ever find yourself, in the grave situation of living out of a hotel…do KNOW that the menu is very expendable. There is almost always more items in the kitchen than what is listed and many ways to cater to your family’s dietary needs.

What Hotels Won't Tell You 13

    Glass water bottles:

I’ve noticed in European hotels, that they will always provide a large glass water bottle with meals etc. However, if you do not see them cork open that glass right before you…well, you can be pretty sure you are drinking tap water (honestly, even if you do…there is still a chance. So go with bottled) This isn’t always ideal depending on the location, or you’re own personal digestive system)

What Hotels Won't Tell You 14

    Ice:

Same here, avoid it if possible as this is ALWAYS made with tap water.

So, those are just a few of my quick tips if you’re finding yourself living out of a hotel! Which I hope you don’t unless of course, you want to 😉

  • A Traveler’s Guide to Healthy Eating While on the Road

Between hotel rooms, fast food stops, and unfamiliar restaurants, how do you continue to eat healthy while you’re traveling on the road? It’s not always easy, but sticking to a healthy diet is very possible. Discover how you can maintain your diet and your travel plans at the same time with these healthy eating tips. Try these strategies:

    Plan ahead

The sooner you can start planning, the easier it’ll be to stay on your diet. Where are you going? How will you get there? What will your schedule be like while you’re there? Once you’ve narrowed down the schedule for your trip, you can begin to plan for healthy food options.

Do some online research for the locale you’ll be visiting. Where are the nearest grocery stores? Do you see healthy cafes or restaurants? What about nearby farmer’s markets?

By finding safe and healthy locations that offer food that fits your lifestyle, you can maintain your diet.

Select grocery stores over fast-food chains

Instead of stopping at a fast-food chain and trying to decide how many calories are in the fries or burgers, you can stop at a grocery store. Grocery stores are more likely to have deli’s that offer healthier options.

Grocery stores offer packaged salads, bags of nuts, trail mix, healthy dips, and other choices. You can usually find cut up fruit and vegetables in plastic containers for sale at grocery stores.

You may also want to reach for the yogurts, cheese, and smaller containers of milk. Dairy has protein in it, so you’ll feel fuller for a longer period of time. You can find a variety of dairy products in small or travel sizes.

    Bring your own snacks

If you’re going on a road trip, you can pack a cooler with ice and bring healthy meats, vegetables, fruits, breads, and other snacks.

If a cooler is not an option, then consider shelf-stable foods that can fit in a bag or purse. Can you find healthy nuts, crackers, or trail mix to fit your diet? What about dried fruits and vegetables?

    Stay hydrated

It’s important to stay hydrated as you travel on the road. Dehydration can sometimes lead to overeating because your body becomes confused. If you’re dehydrated, your brain may interpret this as you’re hungry, when in reality, you are thirsty! Bring several water bottles with you or purchase them along the way. This will help you avoid dehydration and cravings for other foods.

    Avoid simple carbohydrates

You may crave comfort food as you travel, but it’s not always a healthy option. Simple carbohydrates can raise your blood sugar and cause it to later crash dramatically. This can leave you irritated and tired.

Instead of simple carbohydrates, reach for multi-grain, complex carbohydrates. Add protein such as peanut butter and nuts. You can purchase travel-size containers of peanut butter.

Also, eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day can help you avoid cravings. Try to schedule your stops and get food at the same time. You can avoid cravings by planning ahead.

Being on the road doesn’t mean you have to give up eating healthy.

You can still maintain your healthy diet by planning ahead and following these guidelines.
