  • Uber Quick DIY Home Makeover Tips

    Simple, Quick DIY
    Home Makeover Tips Sheet

How to make an empty house a home in just a few days!

    • Can’t paint your whole house?- Add wooden borders to the bottom of walls all along home…and borders (paper or paint) along top or middle as well.
    • Lighter walls make small spaces seem larger: Place furniture along walls for small spaces and embrace mirrors!
    • Less is more in a home in every area

Not staying long or can’t afford to furnish immediately? Here are some ideas…

Living room area- stop at resale shops/charity shops/garage sales/ your friend’s storage unit LOL and ask around for unused and unwanted items… you’ll be surprised at what you can find this way!

Or you can furnish your home the way I have done countless times-with amazon!

Because we travel so frequently and don’t own a home, we always have a vacant apartment to fill. This is what I’ve done:

We’ve purchased inflatable sofas! HA! And when dressed with pillows, they can be a lot of fun!

If television is needed- Any large department store will be your friend, with cheap TVs and stands/otherwise your computer is perfect!

Get yourself a picnic table for cheap- and toss a nice tablecloth over it… Any chair will do, and you can place chair pillows on tops of these.

Furnish your kitchen with what the dollar store and Walmart/target etc has to offer!

They can even be cheaper than the dollar store and offer better quality on some items. Like utensils such as spoons and forks but the dollar store is better for those small items like cutting boards and tongs etc.

Ditto for bathroom needs such as shower curtains etc.

Amazon & your typical local superstore will have nice selections of rugs for cheap and bathroom essentials that go a long way to make a house much more cozy.

Now, I give these suggestions, assuming you’ll be living in this new space short-term…

IF it will be long-term, I’d suggest trying as best you can to save to buy better quality items from other stores. Buying quality items may have a high up-front cost…but will last SO much longer 🙂

…Because there will always be strict limitations with weight and dimensions during travel, these are some of the things I do & bring along to help make our travel homes feel more like home:

    Things I Bring:

    • Removable wall decals
    • Lightweight Artwork (This could be quality artwork that’s printed & laminated or a small, lightweight canvas & photos)
    • Over-the-door hooks
    • Lightweight play-mats
    • Two sets of sheets
    • Photos
    • Books (paperback only)
    • Dry-erase markers
    • Select toys
    • Poster putty
    • Adjustable suction cup hooks

    Things I Do:

    • Save & reuse glass food jars, buy paint & decorate
    • Draw, paint, color some more & display
    • Write on our mirrors, fridge, dishwasher & any other workable surface
    • Maintain consistency with house decor

  • Is Your Child Depressed?

    Can Kids Get Depressed?

Many people wonder if kids and teens can get depressed. In the case of teens, adults may attribute symptoms of depression to typical teen emotional swings. But experts and pediatricians point out that children and teens really can get depressed, and maybe afflicted with the actual illness of depression.

What Causes Kids to Succumb to Depression?

As in adults, depression may have multiple causes or one cause that varies among individuals. Some factors are unique to specific stages of life, however.

    Children

Children may become depressed because of genetics (like adults). They may have inherited a tendency toward depression, and perhaps there was a trigger that caused it to surface. Children may become depressed due to divorce, as they are uniquely affected by their immediate family’s dynamic. Bullying at school is also something children may have to face that is not a factor for adults.

A child with a tendency toward perfectionism may be more prone to depression as well, sources say. Children with this tendency may “beat themselves up” unnecessarily over failures or perceived failures.

    Teens

This age group is considered particularly prone to depression. This may be due in part to the hormonal upheavals that occur during the teen years. But be careful – it’s easy for adults to take this information and think “it’s just hormones” and therefore believe the depression does not need to be addressed. Experts agree that depression, regardless of its cause, is something that should be addressed and treated.

Teens may also be dealing with bullying at school, or even just “harmless” teasing. They may be experiencing their first crush or rejection from the opposite sex. Other causes may be purely physiological; maybe nothing is particularly wrong in the teen’s life, but his or her brain seems to run in a depressed mode.

    What Are the Signs?

Here are some warning signs of depression in kids:

    Children

Parents should be vigilant for any talk about suicide or morbid fascination with death. Other sources point out that television and movies should be carefully monitored, both for the potentially depressing subject matter and for the psychological effects of TV viewing in general (studies show that children

who watch six or more hours of TV a day are more prone to depression).

    • Sleep disturbances or changes in sleep habits
    • Sudden increase or decrease in appetite
    • Angry outbursts or irritability
    • Lack of interest in social activities or friends
    • “Touchy” about perceived rejection

    Teens

Some of the signs of depression in teens are like those in children; some are different. As with children, parents of teens should be keenly aware of any indications of suicidal thoughts. Music, movies, and television are also sources of potentially depressing images and subject matter.

    • Weight loss or gain
    • Over-exercise or obsessive dieting
    • Binge eating
    • Angry outbursts/yelling at parents
    • Withdrawal from social activities and family

  • Ultimate Baby Needs Checklist

During pregnancy, it’s so easy to drive all of our excitement and joy to the new addition. We buy all things baby and we forget about ourselves! Here is an *ultimate* list of all things maternity that you can use!

    Recommended:

    Maternity support bra

    Sleeping bras

    Nursing bras

    Maternity pants

    Pajamas

    Maternity tops

    Maternity dresses

    Swimsuit

    Support belt

    Stretch mark cream

    Pregnancy book

    Journal

    Devotional

    Baby development book

You’ll want alllll the bras for comfort and support. Do not sacrifice this unless you absoloutely must. A swimsuit is only necessary if you’ll be swimming. ( you should! It’s the best form of exercise. You get a gentle way of exercising everything at once) The stretch mark cream will obviously help the marks fade quicker.

And I always recommend a pregnancy journal, like this one, or this one so thata you never forget those precious memories.

A devotional is paramount if you’re spiritual as it’ll help keep you on track during the easy and tough times alike.

Lastly, like the pregnancy book, you’ll love having this baby development book for keepsakes.

Now, you may not need all of these things in your bag. First, ask your hospital what they’ll provide and do yourself a favour and pack lighter.

Baby clothes (for first 2-3 months)

When you begin shopping for clothes for your new arrival, the vast array of tiny and cute items of clothing can be completely overwhelming! Adding to that, you’ll need to decide what size clothes you will actually need to buy. Our comprehensive list below provides the essential items to stock up on for your baby’s arrival to make your life easier.

    recommended

    • 6-8 xsleepsuits
    • 4 xwrap-over vests
    • 6-8 xbodysuits
    • sun hat
    • 2 xsoft cotton hats
    • 2 xcardigans
    • 2-3 xsocks (pairs)
    • 2 xscratch mitts (pairs)

    nice to have

    • jacket/coat
    • 3-4 xdaywear outfits
    • shawl

The coat may be a necessity depending on the season your due. So plan accordingly.

    Out and about

You will be eager to take your baby out to introduce them to the world. If you are planning to transport your baby by car then it is essential to have a fitted child car seat. However, there are plenty of other essentials you will need to make traveling with your baby as safe and easy as possible; check out our list to get yourself and your baby travel-ready, quickly and easily.

    recommended

    • stroller (suitable from birth)
    • weathershield
    • stroller umbrella
    • infant car seat
    • child view mirror
    • changing bag
    • cosytoe

Believe it or not, depending on where you live and whether or not you’re traveling by bus, car, etc. You may or may not need a stroller. If you’ll be planning a lot of air travel, I highly recommend it as it’s super convenient. And if you’ll be using a car at your destination then you’ll want a car seat as well. (double check if one will be available and save yourself the hassle of lugging yours around)

    nice to have

    • car seat base
    • baby sling or carrier travel
    • baby mattress
    • sun blinds

    Sleep time

Sleep is especially precious to new parents. So you to be able to sleep soundly you will want to be sure that your baby is safe and comfortable in their cot. There is a lot to consider, from picking the right mattress to decorating the nursery. Below you’ll find a list of essential and ‘nice to have’ items that we’ve put together for you to create the perfect sleeping environment for your baby.

    recommended

    • moses basket & stand or crib
    • mattresses*
    • waterproof mattress cover*
    • 4 xfitted mattress sheets*
    • 4 xflat sheets*
    • 2-3 xblankets*
    • changing unit orcot top changer
    • baby listening monitor
    • room thermometer
    • diaper pail

Full disclosure here, I’ve always been a minimalist at heart, well before it before THE thing. I didn’t use all of these bedding items for every child. When I did have a crib, it was just that and several fitted sheets. (you’ll wash often anyway) And of course a few blankets when needed. This won’t be necessary though if you opt for a swaddle. I’ve also never used a room thermometer in my life but I know some moms may like the option. Same goes for a diaper pail.

    nice to have

    • wardrobe
    • chest of drawers
    • mobile
    • swaddling blanket
    • 2 xsleeping bags
    • blackout blind
    • nightlight
    • nursing chair

As I mentioned the swaddling blanket earlier, this wa actually a must have item for me. Everything else are nice extras.

    Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding your baby can help to give your baby the best start in life. Breast milk helps to protect your baby from infections and diseases. There is lots of advice and guidance available to get you started. We have listed out everything you will need to begin.

    recommended

    • 3 xnursing bras
    • 2 xsleep bras

    • breast pads- disposable or reusable
    • 20 xmuslin squares
    • breastfeeding support pillow
    • nursing tops
    • mobile
    • breast pump
    • breast milk storage bags
    • bottles/sterliser
    • soothers / dummies
    • nipple cream / shields / shells

    Bottle feeding

If you are bottle-feeding your baby it is important to be fully prepared, as unlike breastfeeding you will not have your babies food available on demand. It is vital that you know how to sterilise equipment safely and have a good supply of formula milk. Our list will guide you through the items needed to successfully bottle feed your baby.

    recommended

    • 6-12 xbibs
    • 4 xbottles
    • 4 xteats
    • 20 xmuslin squares
    • sterilizer(steam, cold water or microwave)

    • pacifiers
    • milk powder storage container
    • sterilizer bottle
    • breast pump
    • breast milk storage bags
    • bottle warmer
    • bottle storage bag

I’ve gone both routes, breast and bottle feeding and everything here is right on the money.

    Weaning (6 months)

Once your baby reaches 6 months it is time to begin gradually introducing solid, non-milk foods into their diet. We understand the weaning process and how stressful it can be, with common problems such as your baby not eating enough or not liking vegetables. To prepare them (and you) for this time we recommend investing in the essentials we have listed out below:

    Bath and change time

Bathing can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the day. Try and maximize the fun while keeping bath time safe. Checking that the temperature is safe for your baby is essential, while adding some bath time toys is a little extra that can help put a smile on your baby’s face. • Expecting mom checklist essentials

      Hello, New & Expecting Moms!

Congratulations and blessings on your little one! I want you to know that YOU are amazing, you ARE awesome, and YOU rock!

Although I don’t know you, I care about you and your family- so let’s embark on this journey together!

Here are a few things, I wish someone shared with me when I was pregnant-

First, what baby items do I really need? What’s helpful? What’s a waste? If you haven’t noticed already- those baby gadgets and trinkets are running up your bill. And it doesn’t stop now, sorry to report!

Baby shopping can be sooo thrilling and daunting at the same time. So I’ve compiled a list of excellent must-haves and some things that may or may not suit your family needs.

      1. Diaper bag– I know, I know, this one is a given- but I wanted to note, don’t feel pressured into purchasing one from the infant section…by all means, honesty, any large bag with a zillion pockets for organizing will work! My lo is now almost three, and I’ve used “diaper bags”, gym duffel bags, large totes, & backpacks. Use what feels most comfortable to you.
      2. Changing mat– if you purchase a diaper bag- this is usually included “for free”. But if yours doesn’t have one- I recommend the munchkin –insert link……it’s a good size mat that will last through the years, can be washed (or at least I did, in the gentle cycle haha), and has storage for wipes & diapers (although, it won’t fit many when they get bigger)
      3. Nik naks for diaper bag– here are the essentials: diaper rash cream, diapers, wipes, hand sanitizer, diaper disposal baggies (or just regular supermarket bags to discard soiled diapers), chocolate, breast cover or bottles etc. if bottle feeding, infant Tylenol, change of clothes for baby and shirt for yourself (if I could count the many times I walked around the mall with vomit or pee on my shirt!), cream, chocolate, wallet,
      4. Crib– I say go ahead and purchase one and forget the Moses basket or bassinet, because you will be shocked at how much they add to cost, only for your lo to outgrow VERY quickly. Remember, no drop-down rail& invest in one that converts to a toddler bed for an extra score!
      5. Baby bouncer or swing– I recommend the fisher price swing…..it is such a helper for you around the house, its portable and allows you to be handsfree right when you need it. The vibration, swinging motion, and music are all amazing, and your lo will sleep like a baby! This is a bit pricier than a bouncer but totally worth it. (consider ones that turn into a toddler seat for longer use)
      6. Stroller– lightweight, jogger, travel system? All the joys of picking this out! AHHH I know. I went through quite a few so, here are my suggestions- consider how often you will use it? Is it comfortable to push? Is it light or heavy (this will be important to you if you travel frequently and have no access to elevators/lifts. What type of wheel will I choose? (tires will give better rides but can be subject to punctures& don’t forget plane travel as you may have to deflate them) do you anticipate running with your stroller? Warranties included? Does it fit in your car/home space? & please, please always read reviews and don’t be scared to purchased second hand. Either way, always give you a stroller a proper checking when buying.
      7. Car seat– if you opt for a travel system, as I once did, know that later down the line, you will need to purchase a toddler seat and so on, according to your lo’s age. Save the time&money, consider investing in a convertible car seat. You will save money in the long run!
      8. Any sort of musical mobile or crib nightnight with images and music etc. I found my little loved staring at them!
      9. Crib border– you won’t need this until your little one can crawl as his little limbs may get stuck in the crib gaps.
      10. Changing table– For us, it wasn’t purchased nor needed…you will find that you wind up changing the baby wherever they are!
      11. Wiper warmer– are you serious? No, are you kidding me? Trust me. You can pass on this one…
      12. Playmat– not needed…any sheet or colorful quilt & simple tethers/toys will work!
      13. Nursing pillow– if breastfeeding, I found that this was a more considerable help than the average pillow, but this too isn’t a dire necessity, it will make your life easier tho
      14. Breast pump– if breastfeeding, yes, yes, and yes! Electric please-I recommend…..
      15. Car seat cover– if you purchased travel system (to protect baby from harsh elements) definite yes if you give birth during harsh weathers
      16. Baby carrier—yesssss!!!!!!! Can I get an Amen to free hands & multitasking please?! I recommend infantino….

So what do you think? Is there anything that’s not included here that should be? Or perhaps something that’s here that really isn’t necessary? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Us mamas need all the views to make the best decision for our families!
